Fala, whose full name was ‘Murray the outlaw of Falahill,” was given to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as a Christmas gift in 1940. Code named “The Informer” by the secret service because he was almost always by FDR's side, Fala became one of the most famous canine figures in American politics. He received so much fan mail that he even had his own press secretary who also issued statements and responded to media inquiries for him. In addition to meeting some of history’s most important figures and traveling with FDR, Fala is the only presidential dog to appear in statue form and can be seen today seated next to his master at the FDR Memorial in Washington, D.C.
